एकली पाणीया नवजाय साजणी I
सवें पाठवा मूर्ति सावळी वो माय II
विष्णुदास नाम्याची स्वामिणी काळी I
कृष्णमूर्ति बहु काळी वो माय II
- संत नामदेव
It says ,
" रात्र काळी घागर काळी " is a well known devotional praise song of Supreme Lord Krishna , composed by Saint Namdev. In this composition ,
Gopi represents the inherent instinct in us to experience Supreme Consciousness.
The Gopi is absorbed in the mystical experience of Supreme Lord Krishna. Immersed in His thought she is going to river Yamuna to fetch water. Portraying her Saint Namdev says " In the pitch black night , Yamuna's water appears blackish. The Gopi is carrying a pot black in colour. She is wearing black bangles. The pearls in her nacklace are woven in a black thread. She is wearing a black Sari and blouse. Her entire attire is draped in black apparel. ". She is afraid to go to the river all alone at night. Hence she envisions to be accompanied by Krishna, the Lord Supreme of characteristic Dark Cloud complexion
In our culture , black colour often relates to bad omen. But in this Abhang , Saint Namdev has elucidated the beauty of black colour by its resemblance to Divine Lord Krishna. Most of dimensions of composition relate to His complexion. The Divine experience appears to have merged into the blackness of world entire . "
